Baarle-Hertog consists of 22 Belgian enclaves nestled inside the Dutch municipality of Baarle-Nassau — and to make things even more delightfully confusing, there are smaller Dutch counter-enclaves sitting inside the Belgian ones. Walking down the main street, you'll notice small crosses and letters marked on the pavement showing exactly where one country ends and the other begins. Stand with one foot in Belgium and the other in the Netherlands — it's a quirky photo opportunity you won't find anywhere else!

Fun Facts Worth Knowing

During World War One, shop owners on the Belgian side were famously able to stay open later than their Dutch neighbours, simply by moving their front door. Since the nationality of a building was determined by where its main entrance stood, a quick renovation could change everything. Resourceful doesn't even begin to cover it.
